Location

Pool
This large glass enclosed room is dominated by a long olympic size swimming pool. Strangly there is no hint ot cholrine in the air, just the tang of salt water. It's a salt water pool and the water is clear, clean and during the cold months heated to a comfortable temperature, much like the room itself.

The pool is a zero degree entry pool at one end and increaes in depth along its length to 8 1/2 feet at the other. At the deepend are two low dives and along is length are a few ladders to make getting out easier. There are NO slides or a high dive.

The room is floored in a mosaic of earth tone tiles and there is an entrance to the gym and the locker rooms. Furnishings include patio chairs, and a table or two, along with the required safety gear.

Scene

It's Thursday evening, 'free time' as they like to call it at boarding schools. This evening finds a particular Ares wearing swim trunks and a t-shirt as he stands in the shallower end of the swimming pool. He's up to his shoulders in the water and seems to be doing his martial arts kata in the water, the sweat on his brow indistinusihable from the droplets of water that have splashed onto his face. His hair is loose, tight black curls hanging down over his forehead, cheeks and neck since his hair isn't in braids at the moment. If anyone were to hazard a guess, they'd probably think he's been at it for a while, given his heavy breathing.

Nina pads out of the locker room, feeling terribly, terribly exposed. Especially once she ventures into the water and her swim skin gets wet, clinging to her skin. "You don't have gills this time. You don't have gills this time." She keeps repeating that to herself. She looks over to Marcus and watches him work out like that, curiously.

Marcus is really focused on his kata, so he doesn't immediately respond to Nina's approach. However, after finishing a set of moves, he pauses, holding his stance in the water and looking over towards Nina with an easy smile. "Sup, Nina! How's it hanging?" he calls over, giving her an upnod. He then goes in motion again, going through his next set of maneuvers.

Nina looks baffled. "How is what hanging?" So much idiom, so little time to even hear it all. She ducks down into the water up to her neck. But the water is warm, not ice cold sucking the life out of her. She squeezes her eyes shut and grits her teeth.

Marcus blinks a little, confused by Nina's confusion, enough so that he pauses his movements for a second to look over at Nina. "… I dunno? … how's it going?" he tries, if that's any better. He then continues with his motions, several kicks, blocks, and punches slicing through the water at slower-than-normal speeds. Water resistance is good training!

Nina rises up out of the water until it's only belly-button deep, catching her breath. Not from exertion, but from a deep and abiding sense of panic. She holds onto the side and sniffles. Water over smooth scales and gills is one thing. Over warm blood, skin, and potentially in lungs… that's something else. She takes another few breaths, replaying what Marcus said in her mind. "I shouldn't be so afraid of water." She looks over and wipes her eyes. "But I'm terrified. That's how it's going."

Once again, Marcus pauses his kata after he hears Nina, turning towards her. "… you okay, Nina?" he asks, quietly, noticing that she's wiping at her eyes. He grimaces and glances away, not wanting to embarass her or anything. "Why are you getting in the water if you're scared of it? Nobody dared you to, did they?" he asks, frowning and furrowing his brow at the last thought.

You say, "I have to learn to swim. I don't want to drown again. She squeezes her eyes shut and wipes them. "Damn. I didn't mean to say that.""

Marcus's eyebrows raise and he blinks. He is pretty sure he heard what he thought he heard. But, then again, Nina doesn't understand stuff people say all the time, so maybe this time it's what she said that isn't being understood. … yeah, that's gotta be it, right? Marcus grimaces a little and reaches up to run his hand through his wet hair. "Have you asked anybody to teach you? I'm sure one of the instructors would help you," he offers.

Nina sits on the stairs, clinging to the bar. "Yeah… I'm signed up for lessons. But I figured I'd better… you know." She gestures toward the pool. "Get wet in here. I have a long, tragic history with water." She sticks her tongue out. It makes her feel a little better. A gesture of her hand and something cannonballs into the water a respectful distance away from Marcus. Two or three times. She closes her eyes again and takes a long breath. "I didn't want to go all to pieces in front of the whole class or something.

"… oh," Marcus says, scratching his head again. He walks closer to her, torso coming out of the water so his shirt clings to his chest. Not that there's anything to see, really- the t-shirt fabric is thick enough not to become transparent and he's not muscular enough to show out yet. "… did you … wanna talk about it?" he asks, moving to lean against the side of the pool close by.

Nina sags a little. "Are… you ok with… I mean, would you have freaked out if we'd actually turned up a ghost the other night? Or would it just be so interesting to you that you'd forget to be scared?" She scootches down another step, letting the water get up to her neck.

Marcus cants his head to the side and thinks about it. "… you know … I dunno," he says, shrugging. He smiles easily, though, an impish grin curling the corners of his lips. "I get excited easy, but I don't /scare/ easy. So, I'd like to think I'd be too psyched to be scared. I know I didn't really get /scared/ when the dinos attacked, just worried. So … I dunno!"

Nina curls a very faint smile and looks down at the water. "I can so completely picture that." She looks at him. "I was born in 1898. And in 1912…when I was fourteen…my family immigrated to this country. Exept that along the way, on its maiden voyage, our ship hit an iceberg and sank. And I went down with her. I…drowned…and became… you'd probably call me a poltergeist. That's what I call myself, at least. In English, anyway. Bound to a teacup from a table in the first class dining room. And when they brought it back to the surface? I came with it.

Marcus listens to Nina's story, taking it in stride cuz strange stuff happens here! And then, she says she's a teacup. And a smirk starts growing, as Marcus immediately misses anything she says after that. He does manage to wait until she finishes, though, before he sings- gestures and all, "I'm a little tea-cup, short and stout! Here is my handle and here is my … er …." (Un)Fortunately, teacups don't have spouts, so Marcus has no idea how to finish the song.

Nina snorks softly. She actually had heard that little ditty, but hadn't made the connection to herself. She laughs a tiny bit and hauls herself up a step. "I am not stout. I wasn't then either." She gestures toward herself. "This… isn't the face I was born with, nor the body either, but…it's not too different. Just taller.

"Were you a girl, then? Or … what happened when you were a teacup? And if you were a teacup, how'd you get to be a girl again?" Marcus asks, very full of questions, now. When Nina gets up to show she's not stout, Marcus looks at her much more seriously, though it's not the gawking-type of look. Nina has engaged Marcus's INVESTIGATION MODE.

Nina nods. "Yeah. I was a girl. I got… bound to the teacup because I stole it. Or maybe because it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen and I fell in love with it, which is why I stole it. Or something. I don't really know. All I know is that wherever…souls are supposed to go, mine didn't. Over time… when fish bumped into my teacup, I…joined them. Swam around the ocean being a fish. I've laid eggs, I've been eaten by a shark… I've been the shark… when they brought my teacup ashore… eventually I wound up in a museum. And a rat got into the display. I became the rat. The rat got caught by a stray cat. I became the cat. And so on." She squeezes her eyes shut again. "Alina…" she gestures to her face. "…was nice to the cat right up until someone shot her. I became her… to try and save her." She shakes her head. "But she left before I got the bleeding and the seizure stopped. So I stole this body, too. And if I drown, I go back to the teacup. Which isn't in the museum anymore. It's here.

Marcus listens, rapt. "That's /so/ strange!" he says, though he doesn't say it in a derogatory way. Plus, the way it makes him smile would make one to believe he sees it as a good thing. "So … you can't die permanently? Do you /always/ go back to the teacup? Or just if you drown? Do you /have/ the teacup, or do the teachers have it to keep it safe? Can I /see/ it!?" Yes, Marcus is fully invested, now.

Nina looks down. "Any time the body I'm riding in dies, if I can't see anywhere else to go right then, I go back to the teacup. What happens if you break the teacup… I don't know. Don't want to find out." She takes a slow breath. "Yeah, I have it. I stole it from the museum. I need you to keep that a secret. Keep everything about the teacup a secret." She looks down at the water and then at Marcus. Holds up one finger and slips down the stairs, until her head's under water and her hair billows out in it. She stands up pretty quickly after that, shaking, despite the warm water, and hugging her arms around herself. "I'm done here," she says simply, and climbs out of the pool. She pauses and looks back at Marcus. "CAN you keep it all a secret?

Marcus nods along as Nina explains further, absorbing all the details. "I won't even write about it in my adventure journal," Marcus promises. And then, when she double checks as she leaves, Marcus straightens up and salutes. "Ma'am, yes ma'am! I will take it to my grave!" He finishes his salute, then smiles, sending a little splash after Nina as she gets out. "Have a good night! I've gotta finish my kata, so I'll see you in class."

Nina turns back. "I was… gonna show it to you. And… stuff."
"/Oh/!" Marcus exclaims, perking right up. Instead of taking the steps, he just pushes himself up out of the side of the pool and then rotates his legs up and out, clamboring to his feet. "Okay! My bad! I thought you were just going back to your room or something."

You say, "I am. That's where it is. And you need to meet Alina. So you believe me that I didn't take over someone who could still be independent if I let her.""

Marcus fast-walks over to his towel, snagging it and drying himself off as he walks back. "I believe you, Nina. Why would you lie to me about anything?" he says, smiling. "But whatever you wanna show me, I'm /definitely/ down!" he adds, grinning.

Nina looks at Marcus. Towel. What a good idea. She blushes suddenly at the idea of taking a boy to her room and showing him things, but doesn't say anything. "Come on."

When Nina starts walking without going to get a towel or anything, Marcus grimaces. "… here," he offers, holding the towel out to her. He's really only rubbed his hair and face with it, so far, so she could definitely still do some drying if she wanted. Especially since they'll have to go outside and stuff.

*Scene Change - Nina's dorm room *

Nina drapes Marcus' towel over her shoulders after drying her own hair with it, and wiping some of the water out of her swim skin. She plucks it away from her skin a little as though hoping it won't cling as much as it has been. She leads Marcus to the room and opens the door. A glance. The room is empty. She leads Marcus in, wondering why this all feels so naughty. Well. This is something she's never actually shown anyone this..
<FS3> Marcus rolls Stealth: Success.

Marcus goes full secret-agent mode when they reach the dorms, diving over furniture and otherwise being ridiculous as he 'sneaks' down the girl's hallway and follows Nina to her room. Did he /really/ need to do a somersault in the hallway? The worst part is, he's completely serious about it, too, glancing back and forth before he darts into Nina's room and presses his back against the wall. "Okay! I don't think anybody saw me. Now, as long as they don't go back and watch the security cameras …." he trails off. And then he looks around. … and realizes where is is. A GIRL'S ROOM! … after a moment, he realizes it's not really that different from a boy's room. It's not covered in pink stuff or rainbows, there's not stuffed animals littering the floor …. This was not nearly as exciting as it should be. Marcus is /not/ impressed.

Nina looks back at Marcus. "I think you work too hard at being inconspicuous." She closes the door. "We're not doing anything dirty or anything. I just… I'm still re-learning to be human, even, and I'm not good at making friends yet. And someone needs to know this, otherwise Alina will die, and I'll spend another god damn century in the teacup." She goes over to the tea set, and picks up the little tray it's on. "Almost all of these are reproductions. From the gift shop at the museum." She sets down the cobalt blue Titanic first class tea set. Four cups and saucers, one teapot, cream, and sugar. "First rule. Unless I hand it to you, never touch any of the teacups without gloves or something. One of them is mine, and I don't want to…" she sighs. "…possess you without asking." She picks up one cup with the corner of the towel. "Second rule. For the love of god, please don't drop this." She hands towel and teacup to Marcus.

"You can /never/ work too hard at being inconspicuous," Marcus retorts. He hovers /way/ too close at first, until he realizes what he's doing and grimaces, taking a step back. He nods to each of Nina's instructions, attention set on 110%. "It's not like I'm ever gonna be in here without you, anyway," he offers with a shrug. And then she's handing him a teacup with a towel. He takes them very carefully, staring at the cup intently, turning it over, examining it. And then realizing, "… it's just a cup?"

You say, "It's possessed. By me." She settles down onto the bed and looks up at the ceiling. "Ok. Time to meet Alina. I'll give you five minutes, then touch her with the teacup. She um. Isn't really… toilet trained without me anymore." Nina stares at the ceiling. And lets go internally. There's a faint ssnaaap and her eyes flare white a moment before going rather dull. The tea cup, at least through the towel, still would feel normal. Perhaps very slightly heavier."

"… oh-kay?" Marcus asks, still staring at the cup. Then, Nina is on her bed and Marcus looks over at the last minute and is suddenly very, very confused. … nothing is coming out of the cup, as far as he can tell. Of course, he's got no experience with ghosts or possession or anything, so the fact that he's expecting something to materialize out of thin air is probably pretty far from accurate. But, the cup /does/ feel … different. Marcus's brow furrows as he tries to comprehend.

Nina just stares into the ceiling, barely blinking. Her muscles are slack, her breathing shallow. It's not sleep, it's just… well. Alina is only slightly above brain dead.

Marcus waits. And waits. And then, he looks confused. "… is something supposed to happen?" he asks, looking back over at Nina. Who … is … just … staring. "… Nina?" he asks, moving closer to peer at her.

Nina's eyes don't focus. She's not aware of Marcus. If she's conscious at all, there's no indication of it.

"… Nina?" Marcus asks again. He leans over her and stares at her face, then swipes his hand in front of her eyes a couple times. Then, he frowns distinctly and looks down at the cup, before setting it down very carefully on the bed and lifting Nina's hand over it. He lowers it very carefully until it's just over the cup, pauses for a second, then lets go so her hand will fall and gently touch the cup, while he hops back a couple steps. … you know … just in case.

Snnaaaaap! Nina's eyes - and the surface of the cup, one might notice - flare white briefly, and Alina, now Nina once again, takes a ragged breath as though she's been holding it. The eyes focus and track over to Marcus. She also is careful not to brush the teacup off the bed. "So… now you've seen. If I ever… posess something, or someone, and can't get back, you'll know what you're seeing with Alina… and you'll know what to do about it. I'm trusting you with my life… or at least my freedom.

When Nina comes back and looks over at Marcus, she'll notice him standing on one foot, his knee and one arm crossed across his body with his other arm raised in the air, as if he were getting himself as far away from her as possible without physically backing up any further. And, once she's back, and back to normal, Marcus will settle back down and stare at her for a few seconds, just to make sure she's really back. Then, he will nod very slowly. "… /huh/!" he exclaims after a beat. "What's it like as a cup? Can you still feel? Have you ever had anybody /drink/ out of you?" And then, his face screws up and he considers something. "… would that be like … /making out/ with somebody?" And apparently, that idea kinda disgusts him. "Even if not, that's still people putting their /mouth/ on you!"

Nina sits up on her elbows and blushes crimson. "Oh my god. Nobody's drunk out of it that I know of. Fish have kissed it… I can… sense when something alive touches it, but I don't know what. That's why I don't want you to touch it without gloves or something unless I hand it to you. Because when I'm stuck in there… I want to jump out at the first touch.

Nina's blush is totally understandable. Cuz that'd be gross! Marcus relaxes when she says nobody has drunk out of it, nodding. "Well! That's good." Then, Marcus blinks and looks confused again. "You don't mean they like, /actually/ kissed it, right? Just touched it?" … then, another thought. "Wait! … do /fish/ kiss?"

Nina frowns a little, "When I was a fish… even when I was laying eggs and a male was fertilizing them… we didn't touch. Fish aren't… romantic. They're not.. sensual. When something touches them, it's usually bad." She ponders. "But if they're curious about something, they touch it with their mouths."

"Like a baby!" Marcus says. He looks around for a minute, then pulls out the chair from Nina's desk, sitting in it backwards so he can fold his arms over its back and rest his chin on his forearms. "That's /so/ bonkers, man. Like, I've got a pretty good imagination, just ask any adult. But I can't even /begin/ to imagine what all that musta been like!" Then, something else dawns on him and he frowns sadly. "Aww man, Nina. All your friends and family …. I'm sorry! That sucks so bad!"

Nina looks at Marcus and nods. "Kind of, yeah. Cats use their paws. Humans use their hands, Dolphins use… well look it up on the internet. Being a dolphin…" Nina shivers. She looks at Marcus. "Oh no, my mother and my brothers and sisters lived. They're gone now… but… they lived. My uncle lived to die in World War 1, but the rest of them grew up, got married, had children, got old… all that.

"Yeah, but you-," Marcus pauses. He swallows whatever else he was gonna say. If she's not sad about missing out on life with them, he's certainly not gonna argue with her about it! "Well, that's good, then." Then, when she mentions looking up stuff with dolphins, Marcus quirks an eyebrow. "… how many different things have you /been/?"

Nina sits up and hunches over. She pulls her swim skin away from her skin again, acutely aware that it's showing her shape way more than she expected, suddenly. "There are thousands of species in the sea, Marcus. I couldn't name them all. The little crustacean lives are so… linear that it's hard to even remember being them. I usually just jumped to whatever fish was about to eat them. Octopus… that was interesting. The most… alien mind I've had. And eight arms, very touch sensitive, and they're smart. Sharks… I liked being a shark… Dolphins… that made me uncomfortable. They're… very mammalian. Ummm One rat, one cat, and now Alina. I possessed the whole Titanic at one point. Pretty boring - it has no eyes, nothing I could move, or anything like that. And it's falling apart, which felt… bad. Hard to describe. I've kept to myself mostly because like I said, I didn't want to get stuck in my teacup again with Alina three feet away, slowly dying of thirst because she isn't awake.

Marcus listens, once again astonished. "… /huh/," he repeats, shaking his head. "That's pretty awesome, if you ask me," he adds, smiling again. He raises an eyebrow as Nina picks at her top, totally unaware as to why. Then, he shrugs again and smiles. "Well! I'll protect her for you, if anything happens. I'll make sure she gets water and stuff until you get back. And I'll keep an eye out for your cup, too. We're teammates! And friends," Marcus says, holding his fist out as he leans forward in the chair.

Nina gets up and bumps Marcus' fist with her own. "Thank you for being my friend. I haven't had a friend since I came back. Closest I've had was Sebastian… and he's all weird about Keyson. He's like telling me not to flirt with her? I don't even flirt with boys."

Marcus grins when she bumps his fist without having to be told how. She remembered! And then she's talking about Sebastian and he rolls his eyes. "/That/ guy is the /biggest/ jerk. Totally doesn't understand what it means to be a good teammate or a good friend. I tried to make friends with him when school started, but ever since he attacked those dinosaurs unprovoked, I've got /no/ desire to associate with him." Marcus sighs and shakes his head, resting his head on his forearms again. Then, he snickers a little. "I don't think you could if you wanted to. Keyson's totally in love with Sebastian, for whatever reason. Which sucks, cuz she's such a nice person, but she gets all upset if you talk bad about Sebastian, who is all she ever wants to talk about, so …. Yeah."

Nina nods. She chuckles a little. "He is kind of good looking. That might not occur to you. He's a complete labagiu, but… like in Return of the Jedi… I think there is good in him. So do you… date?"

"… I have no idea what that means, but it's still pro'ly true," Marcus says, blinking for a moment then shrugging at Nina's word for Seabass. "And no, I don't date. There was a girl that was kinda doing some experimenting with me. We kissed like … four times? And we snuggled a little. It wasn't … terrible. The kissing was nicer than I expected. It looks so gross in the movies," he says, shaking his head. "But, she's not here right now and I'm not even sure if she's okay or if she's coming back, so! That's all for that!"

Nina blows out her cheeks. "I thought I was the only person here who didn't. I… wasn't interested when I died. I wasn't old enough. We grew up slower back then, from what I've read. Alina…" She gestures to her body and face. "Is about the same age, I guess? But she grew up in the now, with all the nutrition and the hormones in the meat and all of that… so… sometimes I feel like I should know things… know what things mean… but I don't. I'm glad it's not just me." She shakes her head. "I've been… all those lives under the sea… but I never kissed anyone who wasn't related to me. I don't want to do gross things… but you make kissing sound nice.

Marcus chuckles a little. "Slower? But didn't y'all get married at like 15 and start having babies and stuff right away?" he asks. Shows what he knows! When she goes on about the other stuff, Marcus shrugs a little. "Yeah … I'm half-alien, so … I don't think I /get/ the same stuff as other kids?" he offers. "Like, the whole reason I have powers is because my mom's species hormones are so much stronger than humans, so the adrenaline /really/ boosts me up. But I am totally not drooling over anybody like some of the other boys here. And kissing was … I mean, like I said. It was alright. It's pretty much the same as kissing your family, at first. But then you hold it longer and it kinda tingles and stuff. It's … I dunno! Like I said. It was nice. I liked it. But, it wasn't so awesome that I wanted to keep doing it or to do it over and over and over again. I dunno."

Nina ruffles her fingers through her drying, now stringy, curly hair. "Alien hormones? Wow… I was telekinetic back then, even. But all the other stuff… that's because I'm a poltergeist, I guess.

"Yeah, I remember you picking up Keyson and she kinda freaked out," Marcus nods. "And yeah, alien hormones. But adrenaline seems to be the only one that really has a different effect on me," he explains. Because he hasn't met a cat yet and seen what /they/ do to him.

Nina smiles a little. "So my being a ghost is not even the weirdest thing to happen to you today.

"Well … /I/ wasn't a ghost, so … no?" Marcus says, shrugging his shoulders up. "But that's pretty crazy all the stuff that's happened to you! I think we've already talked about the fact that I can't imagine," he says, smirking.

You say, "Oh, one other thing. If you're ever badly hurt… if you let me possess you, I can fix it pretty fast. I won't do it if you don't want me to. And I try to stay away from memories."

That makes Marcus smirk again. "Well, that's one of the things I can do. If I know I'm about to get hurt, my adrenaline kicks in and makes me pretty darn tough," he explains, reaching up and knocking on his chest. "So far, not even charging dinos were able to hurt me."

Nina whistles. "Ok. So you have to show me these dinosaurs."

Marcus sighs and shakes his head. "They're not here, they're where the old school was. I only saw them for a second before Sebastian shot his little ice beam at them and pissed them off. I haven't been back, since, cuz the staff only takes us in teams."

Nina hmms. "I've never been a dinosaur… that could be really interesting.

Marcus grimaces. "… yeah …. I dunno? They killed students when they destroyed the old school, I guess. So … they're not friendly, really."

Nina grins. "Neither are sharks. There's something very… pure about them. They eat. They breed. They sleep. Nothing else happens in their minds.

"Is it true that if they stop moving, they drown?" Marcus asks, quirking an eyebrow.

Nina nods. "Some do, yes. Makos, great whites… they can't push water past their gills without swimming.

"… did you … /breed/ as a shark?" Marcus asks, grinning. "Oh wait! You already said you laid lots of eggs and stuff! Ewwwwww!" he says, and starts laughing.

Nina laughs and blushes. "Yeah… sharks are born alive, too. That feels really really strange.

"OH MY GOSH YOU'VE HAD BABIES!" Marcus exclaims, which only makes him laugh harder. And fall off the chair, onto the floor, clutching his stomach.

Nina laughs and flops back on the bed. "You're funny.

Marcus lets himself have a good laugh at the thought of lots of little Nina-fish babies, but then his laughter slows. And, he thinks about it for a second, then sighs. "You know … I mean, I know it's different, cuz you were an animal then and you're not, now, but …. Isn't it also kinda … I dunno. Sad? Or is it happy? I mean, you've already lived so many lives, and you've brought life into the world already …. That's something some women only ever get to dream about, ya know?" he muses from his new position on the floor.

Nina gets up, thinking about that, then sits down next to Marcus. "I think you underestimate how special humans are. We have… you have souls. Animals… sort of… share one overarching soul. I learned a lot from them… forgot a lot too. But when I could finally open Alina's eyes and look out at the world… I felt like I'd been missing something all this time. Like by dying… Alina inadvertently gave me back the gift of life. Plus… I owe her the life she didn't get to have, I guess.

"No, it's not that. It's just … I mean, even if you were in an animal's body, you were still /you/. Even in the teacup. You're you. And /you/ did all that stuff," Marcus explains, folding his hands on his stomach. "… that's … pretty incredible, don't you think? And I get what you're saying. But you also should live for /you/, too, since you didn't get to live your life, either. I don't really believe in fate, and my mom says that every culture has some mythos about somebody being in charge who had a plan, but … I mean, all we can do is the best we /can/ do, right? So you shouldn't put too much pressure on yourself. Just … be the best you you can be."

Nina chuckles. "Remember you said that to a poltergeist, sometime down the road when all the silverware is dancing in the kitchen." She thinks about it, then looks at Marcus from the side. "That sounds… wise."

"Hey, I can be smart sometimes!" Marcus protests, glancing over at Nina. He then sticks his tongue out at her.
