Days before the finals and Whitley is without a care in the world, uncharacteristically cheerful for a Monday afternoon. On his way to his dorm, he ran into his roomie's twin and after a sunny "Hello!", an offer to spar was brought up. The sophomore had to return to his dorm to pick up training equipment, but the only gear of note is a double-edged rapier with an overly fancy grip. Dulled, of course. Dressed in gym shorts and a white tee, he eagerly awaits the girl's arrival.

Well it was unexpected. Sure it had been mentioned in passing when they first met, but when nothing came of it Rain put it behind her and carried on. Then all this other stuff has came up so she has been deftly avoiding getting into the drama of the boys in her life. You would think all the drama would be from her since she is a girl and all. So wrong. Her brand of drama is quite a bit different. Needless to say she agreed. It doesn't take her much longer, and is similarly dressed, working out is about the only time she isn't wearing a dress or skirt.

Not sure what exactly they would be sparring with she carries her duffle with her swords in it across her back and she strides in twisting her hair into a neat bun, securing it with hair pins "I'm here." is the greeting she offers when she sees him waiting. "I hope you didn't wait to long." her tone is perfectly stoic, which for her is natural for people she doesn't know well.

Whitley was sitting crisscrossed on the gym floor, the old, collector's rapier laid across his lap. When Rain arrives, he looks up and pushes back a lock of platinum hair. Stoic isn't really his thing, and he gives the girl a small smile. "It's quite alright." Stretches completed, he stands and glances over Rain's shoulder at the duffle bag. "Are your swords in there? 'Cause I'm not too great in a fist fight." Not exactly true, but recent school brawls would prove it.

Rain has her moments and with Whitley being in that gray area between friend and not it comes easy for her at the moment. There is a bit of metal on metal sounds as the bag is set down "Yes. I wasn't sure what you would be working with so I brought a selection. Even my kendo sword, though I haven't had much training with it yet." the smile is returned with a small one of her own. "I can't say I am all that great in a fist fight either. Though I would like to say I could hold my own." she'll be honest seeing no reason to exaggerate, especially since he is roomies with her brother. She eyes his sword and then unzips her bag to pull out a comparable one, not that she has more than a few in there.

"I have a katana, but it's made of live steel, and most of my partners aren't that hardcore," And because he doesn't want Rain to think she's being underestimated, Whitley adds, "I only use the blade on living targets with the intent to…harm. And killing you probably wouldn't be the best way to start things off." Think of the mess! "I didn't have a foil or a sabre for fencing, so I figured this would work? It's a family antique." The handle alone looks costly, intricately molding around Whitley's pale fist. He stands in a loose stance, .

"As much as I enjoy fencing, I see no reason to use live steel under the circumstances." Rain will neither confirm or deny her hardcoreness for swordfighting. "Thank you." she replies drily, that is underestimating her a bit but she plays along with it "Harming or killing me wouldn't go well for you." and her brother would be the least of his worries. She can tell the blade is dull just by looking at it. Her own though is specifically for practice, the edge rounded, the tip flat. "Well I'm sure a few more bruises aren't going to make a difference." she is regretting not wearing her padding, but then it would be a bit unfair. Stepping forward she drops into a gaurded fencers stance, "Ready when you are."

"I would imagine the opportunity for sharpened weapons never arose." That statement could be enough to assume that Whitley believes the Masters have lived sheltered lives, what with all their riches, but there's some curiosity dripping from his words like he's wondering if such an occasion ever did or could occur. Although he's almost positive he could take on Schuyler with relative ease, why should his sister be any different? It's the same confidence, one which borders on arrogance, that causes Whitley to lunge, the dull point of his rapier aimed at Rain's midsection.

Sheltered lives would be the cusp of it, in a manner of speaking. More like private schools and bodyguards, but same difference really. "Not until recently. I would have loved to have a sharp weapon during the attacks on me the last few months." though she isn't sure how effective one would have been against a metal kraken robot, but she would have at least felt better about it. As she stands bantering she watches him waiting for any tells he may give to advertise his first attack. The clang of metal on metal echoes in the empty gym as she quickly backsteps and swings her sword down to block the weapon aimed at her torso. Her follow through is precise, honed with years of practice and she doesn't hesitate to strike back, swinging her own rapier around for a strike to his left side.

"Besa told me about those attempts. Why would anyone want to hurt you? Isn't attacking you like a declaration on an entire powered dynasty?" The Kings aren't so kind to those who are unable to defend themselves. How Rain hasn't been denounced by her own family is beyond Whitley's comprehension. His edge of his blade is brought to clash against hers in a swift parry. Whitley's counter is almost instantaneous as another jab aims for Rain's arm. He's grinning now, pleasantly surprised by his opponent's skill. The overconfidence is still there, he does plan on 'winning'.

"If we knew why, we would be able to answer the who a lot easier." Rain answers easily enough. It's a question she has thought long and hard about herself "My family has put a lot of bad people away. There is a rogue's gallery of who it could be. Whoever it is has covered their tracks well." so mastermind level at least. As for why she hasn't been kicked out, probably because she is only 14, and they are giving her a chance to prove herself at the school. Who knows what goes through the minds of adults. Once more she is quick to block the jab to her arm and her follow through has her pressing her own attack, this time in a move that is intended to disarm her opponent. It is quite clear that Rain is not her brother, she can talk the talk and walk the walk, or at least hold her own in a swordfight.

"Ah. Well, maybe someone with a vendetta assumed you would be an easy target," Why is obvious, Whitley doesn't need to point it out. "They would be wrong." Whit compliments her gently on her sword fighting. His senses and awareness allow him to swiftly pick up on the intention of Rain's moves, and his rapier is out to ward off the attempt. The counter is made hard enough and with enough momentum that Rain might find herself without a blade if she can't hold on to it.

"Thanks" she recognizes the compliment for what it is "I may not have powers, but I am not completely defenseless." Rain is proving that at the moment, more or less. "Luckily I like the martial arts and fighting practices or all the lessons being lined up for me would be too much." though for the moment three is probably going to be her limit, she has schoolwork to stay ahead of. The sudden power attack while not catching her off guard gets through her defense on sheer strength alone and she staggers back a bit as the dulled edge hits its target. She does manage to hold onto her weapon though Yeah the hi hurt, it shows on her face and she will have a nice bruise to show for it. It will go nicely with her other fencing and akido bruises. "Brute strength, for when finesse just won't do." her teasing is good natured, even after the hit she took "Good hit." she offers him compliments as well, just as she feints with her sword trying to get him to think she is going one way, but at the last second shifts her weight, twists her body and attacks his other side.

"What's up with that?" His nose scrunches up in thought, referring to the 'no powers'. "Your parents aren't mad?" It's an innocent question really. His own father would've beaten him bloody if his powers did not kick in during the early cusps of puberty. Maybe even worse. So the fact that Rain is still living off of her parents is a foreign concept to him. The compliment gets a cocky smirk out of Whitley, and the feint is only noticed after the girl is gone, the hit causes him to stumble backwards some. He blinks because that hurt, and he clearly wasn't expecting it. It's only for a moment though, then he's back in with a poke to her torso.

"My father is not pleased no, but my mother, well she isn't a Masters and comes from her own powerful family. My extended family is grumbling and making threatening noises but no one has gotten brave enough to cross them…yet." she knows the day will come, though isn't sure if that will be sooner or later. When the strike lands she gives him a smirk "See, finesse." she then dances away, but not before his own retaliation gets her in the chest. "Ow, that's pointy." her free hand comes up to rub the spot before she goes in for another attack, and she doesn't have much chest wise to soften the jab. She darts forward her sword arcing upward and forward to lunge at his own chest.

"I can do finesse," And he's not kidding. Agile and quick, he spins out of her reach, the lunge barely catches him on the arm. He winces, burrows furrowed as he closes in again, the blunted edge of his sword directed at Rain's right side. "Do you think that your powers will come in anytime soon? If your entire family's got them…is that rare? There's only been a few children in my bloodline that have failed to inherit our gifts. They were…abandoned." Putting things lightly, as always.

Once more Rain manages to block the blow with a parry on her own sword, even when carrying on a conversation "We have a family tradition, at 13 we are supposed to go on a quest to 'find' our powers. Sky went against our parents’ wishes and ran away to do his." she gives him a nod "It is rare for someone in the family to go on their quest and not get powers. As long as they are on their quest they can't get officially kicked out unless they don't have powers by 18 or they refuse the quest altogether." which is what she has done, so to speak. There is a sigh "Our families aren't so different than. Kicking out those that either are different or don't conform to the rest." it seems he may have touched a nerve, her next attack starts to be quite a vicious one, but she catches herself at the last second and pulls the blow so it doesn't strike as hard.

"That sounds like Schuyler," Whitley frowns, his blade comes up to block hers, but the force of the strike pushes him back a step or two. And not much gets passed him, so the initial ferocity of the attack is noted, but not discussed. Since he has no desire to injury Rain or much worse, for her to injury him (think of his ego!), he takes a few more steps back, ending the duel. "You're very good. I'm…kinda surprised. No offense." He smiles. "Traditions are annoying. With all the pressure my father put on me to be like him…" Snow-white curls sway as he shakes his head. "Sometimes it's better to just get out." A pause before he offers, "If you'd like, I could lend you some of my real blades. In case another Robo Kraken shows up."

Rain bristles a bit at the comment "He did it for me as much as for himself. He died you know," sure it was only for a few moments and the doctors were able to bring him back but "for me." its her brother, of course she is going to jump to his defense. She can insult him but she isn't going to let other people do it. As he withdraws from the duel she gives him a nod "Thank you. You are quite good yourself." whether she is offended or not, its hard to say and with him agreeing with her about traditions, well she would give him a pass anyway "The way I see it. If I am meant to have powers I will get them. I shouldn't have to go and get myself nearly killed to push them along." like her brother did and considering she felt every agonizing moment of it, she is terrified of manifesting, so there is that too. "Getting out is an option too." one she hasn't really thought of much as of yet. His offer has her giving a smile. "I may take you up on that. Thanks for the practice. You should go against Charlotte sometime. She is good too. I'm going to go get cleaned up for dinner. Let me know when you want to spar again." she wiggles her perfectly manicured fingers at him then collects her things and heads out.
