Koa grew up in Oahu, Hawaii to a middle-lower class to lower-middle class family. His dad works as a hotel porter down at Waikiki, and his mom runs a souvenir market stall selling all sorts of cheap trinkets. The family barely makes enough for the four kids, including Koa, two older sisters and one younger brother, yet despite their relative poverty they all manage to grow up to be big kids. Koa himself is one of the biggest kids in every grade since kindergarten, always picked for sports teams because BIG. Unfortunately despite being big and strong, Koa is also slow and lazy, so gradually he gets picked less and less. Which suits him just fine, since he prefers food, the beach and lazing about to sports anyway.

One day Koa and two friends were playing tour guide to some stupid tourists from Japan, and they took them on a day trip to see some local volcanoes for cheap. The group got lost and Koa got hungry, so he went to find some pineapples but ended up falling into a sinkhole. After discovering there is nothing but mold and lichen there to eat, Koa prayed to the goddess of fire and volcano Pele for deliverance, and she responded. Instead of granting him food as he hoped, Pele inflused Koa with the power of the earth, granting him immunity to hunger (among other things). He was rescued from the sinkhole by the authorities, while he was sleeping as a giant pile of rocks, so right away his new secret was out.

The Hawaiian Bureau of Tourism decided to fund Koa's education at Coral Springs, because they saw the value of a high-profile homegrown Hawaiian superhero. Not knowing any better (and not really caring either), Koa was shipped out and spent his freshman year eating and napping through classes. Now he is forced to repeat the year.

Powers

Super Strength: When in his rock form, Koa/Stoneface is superhumanly strong.

Super Durability: When in his rock form, Koa is highly resistant to both physical damage, and most forms of energy attacks. Extreme heat and cold must overcome the natural hardiness of his rock structure, while other forms of energy attacks such as electricity and concentrated light (lasers) almost have no effect on him.

Cause Tremors: He can punch the ground and causes tremors in a wide radius from the point of impact, to cause half earth-based damage to all within range. Alternately he can cause a quick vibration in the same radius that knocks people off their feet, rather than cause damage.

Immovability: Koa can choose to anchor his rock form to a solid surface, and he becomes practically immovable from that spot.

Camouflage: By staying still in his rock form, Koa can look just like a large pile of rocks, undeterminable from normal rocks.

Inhuman Physiology: In his rock form, Koa's normal human requirements are suspended: He doesn't need air, food or drink.
