Flying is learning to throw yourself at the ground and miss
At the start of his freshman year with his original high school, Derek had gone on a camping trip to islands of the great lakes. One day while canoeing by himself he came upon a bank of mist. Rowing through this, he found an island with s large leafless tree, which he climbed. As he neared the top he could see over the mist, but saw no land as if in the middle of a vast ocean. Overhead at the very top of the tree was a large eagles nest. Here he found an amulet in the nest and unaware it had any potential powers, he took it intending to keep it.
As he climbed down, a voice called to him in an unknown language and, startled, he lost his grip and fell towards the mists and ground below. The voice trailed after him, calling a word, “Nooch”. Forgetting to scream half a second, he repeated the word curiously and from his back sprouted two wings. He barely managed to stop himself from hitting the ground, but did, finding he could control the wings.
Thus began his relationship with Odina the Mountain, the spirit of a Mohican holy man. The ancient amulet was the Guardian Spirit and was claimed by the warriors of their tribe who would lead raids against neighbors and later against invaders. Odina would teach him other powers that the amulet granted the wearer as well as explain to him that to find it, he had Mohican somewhere in his ancestry. Derek has yet to explore this heritage of his, simply accepting the amulet lets him fly and do cool things. Odina and Derek are trying to work towards an understanding, Odina wants Derek to learn this shared past and that of his people.
Power Set: Mystical Artifact
Energy (7): Summoning energy from the amulet, Derek can hurl it from his hand similar to a bolt of energy. In a manner one might throw a rugby ball, a underhand spiral of sorts. This is his most powerful attack and it sends a bolt of white energy zipping towards opponents and targets that can be very devastating. It can only hurt others, he cannot yet cut steel, break locks, burn wood and such with this. Its closer to radiation in this form.
Physical (5): Part of his training with Odina is the use of the Mohican warclub, not quite as angular as the gunstock club, it was more curved with the head being somewhat like the ball of a shillelagh. There is sharp stone on the back just like the gunstock club of the Plains Indians. He is very capable of this and emulating from the amulet, it can deal and withstand far more damage than conventional weapons. He is recently learning how to simply hit with his hard energy constructs as well, using a solid beam or object just to hit someone the same.
Hard Energy (3): He is learning an element of control of the energy he summons from the amulet. With this he can now lift as much weight as a normal human and is as dexterous as a normal human. He could float someone else with him while he flies this way or do fine motor skills like open doors, flip pages in a book. He can't go more than this yet, such as pick locks, or create complex machines with the hard energy, like a working engine.
Enhanced Flight (4): His wings are rather fast and dexterous, he can fly well beyond the speed of sound now. Other than flight, his wings confer nothing more to him, he cannot go to higher altitudes than normal humans.
Spirit Call (5): Odina the Mountain has a strong bond with the wearer of the amulet, it being the guardian of his people. The spirit of this long deceased Mohican will come to the call of the wielder of the amulet. He can do things most ghosts can, such as be unseen and pass through walls, find and speak to other dead, has occult knowledge and such. He is not commanded by the wielder, but can be convinced to help if needed.
Energy Support (2): Learning to use the hard energy around him, he is making his body able to withstand some extremities. Currently he can withstand hotter and cooler temperatures than most people, and breath in some extreme conditions. He cannot go underwater to breath, or sustain himself in his own environment yet, he still has a lot to develop. The field is extending beyond just him as this continues to develop. Not to other people, but to give him some room, this may extent to life support in the form of drawing oxygen from the surrounding.
Derek VanZant was born to Timothy and Martha of Willsboro New York. Upstate, on Lake Champlain, Derek was raised in a smaller town environment than the rest of New York. The lake community, they lived the life. By day, his father was an accountant that worked at a small firm up in Plattburgh while his mother stayed home with the kids. Aside from Derek, he had a younger sister, Alesha, and a younger brother, Adam. His sister was closer in age, being 2 years younger, while his brother was 5 years younger.
At a young age, he was always interested in the nature around him. From camping with his dad on weekends to going out on the lake to fish with family and friends. He was always outside and imagined one day he’d be a national park forest ranger or somehow working in the parks or on the lake. This included summers at Pok-O-MacCready Camps for the Adriondack Summer Camps, and never missing a fieldtrip to the woods, the lack, or somewhere outdoors as a child even on days he was sick.
At camp he was always the reckless boy, the one that would jump off the cliff or over the waterfall into the water below. He was unafraid and often times would not like to wait for the others in camp. This lead to a harrowing experience as a young boy when he and a few boys jumped into a stream after a rain and were washed down river. They survived the experience after a night alone in the woods until camp counselors could find them. This didn’t stop his headstrong attitude about going out on the next adventure.
During a family vacation to Yellow Stone during his seventh grade summer vacation, he wandered away from the campsite. Alesha had followed him. Unaware at first, he was lost again for a little while and amidst some park buffalo. Frightened, Alesha revealed herself to him, and he had to protect her. They found some tries to climb to get away from the animals and hide for a few hours and then he managed to figure out his way back to camp. He wasn’t comfortable being a protector like this and has held a minor chip against his sister for flowing him like she did. She is slightly headstrong like Derek.
