Born into one of the oldest heroic legacies in the United States, Alison Trent is the only child of the current Freedom Spirit, and the first daughter to be expected to inherit the mantle. At first, her father was opposed to Alison following down that path, but after she was caught going out at night and fighting local drug dealers, a deal was struck: Alison would receive training, but at Coral Springs under a more structured environment.
Enhanced Physique: A genetic enhancement serum administered to the Liberty Spirit in World War 2 has given the members of the Trent family minor superhuman physical abilities. While her father is strong enough to lift a small car, has reactions and dexterity greater than an Olympic gymnast, and has the durability of a brick wall, Alison is still growing in power. Currently, she can lift a motorcycle, but can’t throw it more than a few feet. Her reaction time and speed is equal to the peak of human potential. She is slightly resistant to concussive and physical blows, like her skin is made of a thick layer of hide. Finally, she can exert herself all out for a half hour without beginning to tire.
Enhanced Senses: Along with her enhanced physique, Alison’s senses are more acute than a normal human’s. She can see almost half again as far as a normal human in shadowed or nighttime lighting. Her hearing and smelling are also slightly sharper, giving a slight boost to her perception.
Self-Healing: A third factor in the genetic enhancements that Alison was born with involve a slight increase in her ability to heal. Light bruising will disappear within a day, and most injuries will heal a day or so sooner than similar injuries on a normal human. Alison also has a heightened resistance to most common ailments, like the cold virus, and mild intoxicants. More serious toxins and infections will affect her, although she will recover from them at a slightly faster rate equivalent to her increased healing from injury.
Gadgets: While Alison is rather intelligent, she’s not a top-notch inventor. Her grandmother, on the other hand, is, and was a gadget heroine in her own right back in the 70’s. Before leaving for Coral Springs, Alison was given a ‘care package’ from her grandmother to help her on her heroic path. Alison has a pair of combat sticks she uses in fighting that can also be combined into a staff (no extra effect on her physical fighting stats). The sticks (and thus the staff) have taser generators built into them to provide electrical shocks. She has a pair of bracers capable of blocking melee weapons made from conventional metals and alloys. Both gauntlets also have line guns built into them that can shoot out 200’ lengths of 500lbs test monofilament line, useful for swinging, ascending walls, rappelling, tripping up opponents, or grabbing items from a distance. The left bracer also contains a micro-computer that Alison can use as a hacking or security terminal, and the right gauntlet has an air gun that can launch smoke pellets, flash pellets, and darts with a paralytic toxin. Finally, Alison has a utility bet that contains other crime fighting and infiltration tools, such as lock picks, a micro cutting torch, infrared flashlight, fingerprint kit, and other small tools.
The legacy of the Trent family dates back to the founding of Pennsylvania, when they arrived alongside William Penn to settle the territory. By the 1770’s the Trents were well-established and had earned their wealth through trading and other mercantile endeavors, and Joshua Trent was one of Philadelphia's most prominent citizens. As the fires of the Revolution spread throughout the colonies, Joshua sympathized with the Sons of Liberty, but didn’t want to jeopardize the safety of his family by openly joining America’s founding fathers. Instead, Joshua donned a mask and created an alter ego, The Freedom Spirit, to act as a spy and saboteur to aid the Colonial cause. Throughout the Revolutionary War, the Liberty Spirit was a thorn in the side of Major William Alderidge, the British garrison commander in Philadelphia, and conducted multiple raids and missions at the request of General Washington. After independence had be won, Joshua hung up his mask and focused on raising his family. But the heroism of the Liberty Spirit was not forgotten, and when the British attacked again in the War of 1812, Joshua’s son Harrison took his father’s mask to become the Freedom Spirit and continue the legend. And so, the identity of the Freedom Spirit was passed on through the generations from father to son, always fighting for justice and freedom in the United States. Up until World War 2, the Trents had always been normal, if highly trained, humans. But an experimental genetic enhancement serum was given to the Freedom Spirit of the time, Jason Trent, giving the family members minor superhuman physical abilities.
Alison Trent, the daughter of the current Freedom Spirit, Matthew Trent, was the first time a daughter had been the first-born child in the Trent lineage. Tragically, her mother had died in a car crash when Alison was only a few years old. Suffering from his grief, Matthew vowed that his daughter would never be put at risk by continuing the Freedom Spirit tradition. Alison discovered her exceptional abilities early in life, and was thrilled when her father and grandfather told her of the family history. Alison’s pride and excitement was short-lived, however, when her father refused all requests to train her. Alison was allowed to take gymnastics classes and participate in sports, but Matthew was adamant about not training her to be able to follow in his footsteps. Fortunately for her, Alison’s grandfather Cole was more open minded and began training her in secret at age 12 when she would visit.
Things couldn’t stay secret for long, and the issue of Alison’s training and desire to become Freedom Spirit one day all came to a head near the end of her freshman year of high school. One of Alison’s friends died from a drug reaction to a new street drug. Alison’s father seemed content to leave the matter to the local and Federal authorities, but she wanted to see justice done for her friend. Wearing a cloth mask and dark workout clothing, Alison would sneak out at night to track down the source of the drug. When she finally did find the source, she quickly found herself in trouble when facing the gang. Alison was shot in the arm during the fight, but her father arrived in the nick of time to save her and capture the gang.
While Matthew was furious with Alison, and his father for training her, Alison eventually wore down her father’s resolve. Her ultimate argument was that in four more years, any objections from her father would be moot, and she would stand a better chance of surviving if she were fully trained by the time she turned 18. Seeing Alison’s resolve, Matthew gave in, but on the condition that she go to Coral Springs to receive her training under the supervision of the school. With the academic year almost over, Alison arrived at the school months ahead of the start of her Sophomore year to ‘catch up’ on organized training over the Summer Vacation period and be caught up with her classmates.
